There were no Google analytics or  blogging strategy behind the frequent references to aliens, UFOs, and sheep on Nurdle Net – although I would like to point out that it only took one post to be in the top ten sites for ‘tree octopus’, if you’re looking for a new blogging niche.  So, when you find a film short featuring a sheep, alien abduction, and an quirky super hero in strap-on roller skates, why resist?

UFO-spotting and alien abduction is becoming more popular in Turkey including the brief, friendly abduction of 1991 Eurovision contestant, Reyhan Karaca, by a ‘prawn-colored’ alien -  not the usual color so maybe things are looking up in alien fashions.

So apparently all the world’s air quality woes can now be laid at the door of the poor table manners of sheep and cattle. They are so inconsiderate as to belch methane as they go about their daily business.  Of course, when the sheep take it upon themselves to try and change their diet, they get into trouble.  I’ll admit I’m puzzled by the advice that people should stop eating these animals and switch to chicken – it seems like there would be fewer of them if they got eaten but perhaps this is all propaganda being spread by the sheep.

I don’t think anyone thought this out very carefully, the majority of sheep are farmed for wool and not planned for the dinner table.  In the U.S. alone last year 443 million sheep were sheered and the U.S. is one of the smallest wool producers in the world.  And wool is one of the few natural textile fibers that is globally available.  I’m allergic, but perfectly willing to defend the rights of everyone to wear something non-petroleum based.  Australia leads the pack on wool production so I wonder what their methane output is?  Given a choice I would rather stand in front of a belching sheep than at the back of a diesel bus so I wish people would stop passing the buck.

Although it’s considerably more low tech than the Samsung LED sheep video, there is now a UK trial run of sheep as billboards, which could spread to more sheep a lot faster than the LED jackets, even if it’s not quite as fun.  But maybe if it works, there will be a combo; LED illuminated signs on sheep…

It’s not really a movie, but wouldn’t it be fun if it were – sheep horror, a whole new genre. For all things Shaun the Sheep, visit his website. There are games, contests, e-cards and a noticeable lack of mention of the intended audience age.

This video is just plain fun, I can’t wait for the documentary on how they came up with the idea and how many pints were consumed in the process.  In addition to the novelty of using LED-tricked out sheep like Lite-Brites it’s a testament to the amazing talents of the sheep dogs working in the dark (and without mention in the credits!)
