Carrier pigeons staging an uprising?

Although the self-help books call it synchronicity when you start noticing a word or thing frequently that you never noticed before – like spotting blue Hondas everywhere after you purchase one – I’m not quite sure what to do with the sudden climb in news stories about carrier pigeons.  I don’t think it’s me.  First there were stories about pigeons smuggling in cell phone parts to prisons (more than one) and now, pigeons serving as data transfer agents. Yes, it started as a stunt but now that they now it works better than the cable lines, why wouldn’t they put a coop on the roof and start expanding the ‘network’?

Is it just that the rest of the news is so boring that the pigeon stories are getting more press or are is there some kind of conspiracy afoot (or aflight?)
